Performance Limits
The Maximum Structural Landing Mass is a hard limit, but operational conditions often impose lower limits. The Regulated Landing Mass is the lowest of:
- Field Length Limit: Mass that allows stopping within the required % of the runway (Dry/Wet).
- Requires correct configuration (Flaps, Brakes).
- Climb Limit (WAT Limit): Mass that ensures the minimum climb gradients in a Go-Around.
- Approach Climb: One engine inoperative, flaps approach, gear up.
- Landing Climb (Balked Landing): All engines operating, flaps landing, gear down.
Tables or charts provide the "WAT Limited Weight" based on Aerodrome Pressure Altitude and Temperature. High/Hot conditions severely restrict this weight.
Quick Turnaround Limit (Brake Cooling)
After a landing, especially a heavy braking one or a Rejected Take-off (RTO), brake temperature rises significantly.
- Requirement: A minimum cooling time is required before the next take-off to ensure brakes can absorb the energy of a subsequent RTO.
- Charts: Brake Cooling Schedule charts use landing weight, brake application speed, and OAT to give the required cooling time (ground idle or flight with gear down).
Runway Surface Condition (RWYCC)
Modern reporting uses the Runway Condition Report (RCR) and Runway Condition Code (RWYCC) from 0 to 6.
- Performance data tables map RWYCC to braking action (e.g., 6=Dry, 5=Wet/Good, ..., 1=Poor/Ice).
- Correct operational landing distances are derived based on these codes.
