Extended Diversion Time Operations (EDTO) is the modern term for ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards).

  • Definition: Operations of twin-engine aircraft further than a specific threshold time (usually 60 minutes) from an adequate aerodrome at one-engine-inoperative cruise speed.
  • Approval: Requires both Type Design Approval (Aircraft reliability) and Operational Approval (Maintenance, procedures, training).
  • Thresholds: 60 mins is standard. EDTO allows 120, 180, 240+ minutes.
  • Critical Fuel Scenario: Fuel required to divert from the most critical point (Critical Point/Equal Time Point) to the alternate following engine failure and/or depressurization.

Polar Operations

Flights in high latitudes (typically > 78° N/S).

  • Challenges:
    • Navigation: Magnetic compass becomes unreliable (Dip). True North or Grid Navigation must be used.
    • Communication: VHF unavailable. HF propagation issues (solar flares). SATCOM (Iridium) required as Geostationary satellites (Inmarsat) are below the horizon.
    • Fuel Freezing: Extremely low temperatures (-60°C to -80°C). Fuel temperature must be monitored (Minimum +3°C above freezing point: Jet A1 freezes at -47°C).
    • Cosmic Radiation: Higher exposure at poles.
    • Rescue: Remote terrain, difficult SAR.
