Sterile Cockpit Rule

Regulations mandate that during critical phases of flight (Taxi, Take-off, Landing, and all operations below 10,000 ft except cruise), the crew must refrain from non-essential duties or conversation. Focus must be solely on the operation of the aircraft.

Noise Abatement Procedures (NADP)

Designed to minimize noise impact over populated areas during departure.

  • NADP 1: Focuses on noise reduction close to the airport. Involves climbing with high thrust and maintaining V2+10/20kt to 3,000 ft.
  • NADP 2: Focuses on noise reduction further away. Accelerating and cleaning up flaps earlier (usually at 800 ft / 3000 ft) to reduce drag and thrust.

Equipment Requirements

  • MMEL (Master Minimum Equipment List): Established by the manufacturer/authority. Defines which systems can be inoperative for the aircraft type.
  • MEL (Minimum Equipment List): Created by the operator (based on MMEL). Must be no less restrictive than MMEL. Used by pilots/engineers to determine if dispatch is allowed with a broken item.
  • CDL (Configuration Deviation List): List of missing external parts (e.g., fairings, static wicks) that can be missing, usually with a performance penalty.

Passenger Briefing

Passengers must be briefed on safety matters:

  • Before Take-off: Seat belts, emergency exits, oxygen, life vests, braces.
  • After Take-off: Smoking restrictions.
  • Before Landing: Seat belts, tray tables, seat backs.
