Aircraft Rain Protection Systems: Wipers, Repellents, and Hydrophobic Coatings
Overview
Rain protection systems are critical for maintaining pilot visibility during taxi, takeoff, approach, and landing in wet conditions.
1. Windshield Wipers
- Description: Electro-mechanical arms with blades, similar to car wipers but robust enough for high speeds.
- Operation:
- Usually controlled independently for the Captain and First Officer.
- Can have multiple speeds (Low/High).
- Limitations:
- Can be noisy.
- Efficiency decreases at very high airspeeds.
- Constraint: Should not be operated on a dry windshield (causes scratching/damage).
2. Chemical Rain Repellent
- Description: A fluid (hydrophobic chemical) sprayed onto the windshield from a reservoir.
- Mechanism: Reduces the surface tension of water, causing it to bead up and be blown off by the airflow.
- Operational Rules:
- MUST ONLY be applied in moderate to heavy rain.
- NEVER apply to a dry windshield.
- Reason: The fluid is viscous and will dry as a smear/stain, severely restricting visibility.
- Recovery: If momentarily applied to a dry window, DO NOT use wipers. Wipers will smear it further. It requires rain or water to wash off.
3. Hydrophobic Seal Coatings
- Description: A permanent or semi-permanent coating applied to the glass surface by the manufacturer or maintenance.
- Mechanism: Penetrates the surface to provide a long-lasting hydrophobic (water-repelling) effect. Rain beads up and falls off naturally.
- Comparison:
- Pros: Lasts much longer than chemical repellents; passive system (no pilot action required).
- Cons: Re-application/restoration requires a maintenance procedure (more effort than refilling a fluid tank).
- Note: It reduces the reliance on wipers but does not replace them.
