Leadership Styles

Leadership Styles Lewin

  1. Autocratic: Leader imposes decisions. Good for emergencies (time-critical), bad for morale/team input.
  2. Democratic (Synergistic): Leader consults team. Best for complex problems (using all resources) but slower.
  3. Laissez-Faire: Leader is passive ("hands-off"). Can lead to confusion and lack of direction.
    • Ideal Pilot: Situational Leader (shifts between Autocratic and Democratic depending on the phase of flight and urgency).

Group Dynamics

  • Synergy: The output of the team is greater than the sum of the individuals (1+1=3).
  • Risky Shift: Groups tend to take riskier decisions than individuals would alone (diffusion of responsibility).
  • Compliance: Subordinates agreeing with the leader just to please them (Trans-Cockpit Authority Gradient).
    • Steep Gradient: Captain dominates, FO silent.
    • Flat Gradient: Too casual, lack of command.
    • Ideal: Optimum gradient where authority is respected but questioning is encouraged.
