Operating Limitations

Key Speeds

  • Vne (Never Exceed Speed): The red line. Operating above this speed risks structural failure due to flutter or excessive airloads.
  • Vno (Max Structural Cruising Speed): The yellow arc. Do not exceed in turbulent air.
  • Va (Maneuvering Speed): The speed below which you can move a single flight control to its full deflection without overstressing the aircraft (the aircraft will stall before breaking).

Aeroelasticity

  • Flutter: An unstable oscillation of a surface (like a wing or control surface) caused by the interaction of aerodynamic forces, inertia, and structural elasticity. It can destroy an aircraft in seconds.
    • Prevention: Mass balancing, high torsional stiffness.
  • Aileron Reversal: (Mentioned in Control) Wing twisting at high speed reverses roll control.

Load Factors (n)

The ratio of Lift to Weight ($n = L/W$).

  • Normal Category: +3.8g / -1.52g.
  • Utility Category: +4.4g.
  • Aerobatic Category: +6.0g.
