Maintenance and Monitoring Systems: ACMS Data Use and FDM Safety Analytics
Aeroplane Condition Monitoring System (ACMS)
ACMS (Airbus refers to it as AIDS - Aircraft Integrated Data System) monitors aircraft systems to identify maintenance needs and anticipate failures.
- Function: Continuously or periodically measures system parameters (Engines, APU, Flight Controls, etc.).
- Transmission: Data can be transmitted automatically via Datalink (ACARS) to the operator's Maintenance Control Center without crew notification, or printed on the flight deck.
- Goal: Predictive maintenance and troubleshooting.
Flight Data Monitoring (FDM)
FDM is a systematic method of accessing, analyzing, and acting upon information obtained from digital flight data records of routine daily operations. It is a requirement for operators of aircraft > 27,000 kg.
- Purpose: To improve Flight Safety and operational efficiency.
- Identify potential risks and adverse safety trends.
- Modify and tailor pilot training programs.
- Principles:
- Non-Punitive: Data is used for safety, not discipline.
- Anonymous: Data is de-identified, except in cases of "grave exceedances" where further investigation is warranted.
