Aircraft Structural Attachment Methods: Bonding and Riveting
Aircraft structures are assembled using various attachment methods to join components securely. The integrity of these attachments is vital for airworthiness. Two common methods discussed are bonding and riveting.
Bonding
Bonding is an attachment process where a relatively light material is added at the joining surfaces of components.
- Process: The material changes its physical state as it dries and solidifies, creating a chemical bond with each of the elements.
- Defects: Cracks may develop due to unequal loading forces or missing bolts.
- Visual Inspection: Issues may be visually identified by observing missing rivets, joints, or collision damages.
Rivets
Rivets are a widely used method for attaching materials together, such as the skin of an airframe. They work by inserting a rivet into holes in the materials to be bonded and deforming the end to hold it in place.
- Loss of Rivets: While rivets are generally secure, they can be lost during normal operations. The most likely causes are improper maintenance or improper installation, which make them insecure.
- Note: Hard landings and high manoeuvring loads can also remove fasteners through shearing forces, but improper maintenance/installation is considered the primary cause. Corrosion is unlikely to remove rivets unless extremely severe.
- Loose Rivets: If rivets become loose, a small gap may form between the panel and the structure. In this condition, the panel is considered partly detached from the structure.
